Custom or standard-size vanity: which fits your project?

A custom vanity earns its place when it solves a specific problem: the fit, the sink position, or the way you need to use the cabinet.

The short version

Choose a standard vanity when its dimensions, layout, and timing suit the room. Consider custom when a particular requirement would otherwise force a compromise.

When standard makes sense.

If an available vanity fits the finished opening, works with the plumbing, and gives you the storage you need, it can be a straightforward choice. Compare the actual cabinet and countertop dimensions, rather than relying on the size name alone.

Check whether the advertised package includes the top, sink, faucet, and installation. Product ranges vary: Room & Board’s vanity listings, for example, distinguish optional tops and sinks. Its specifications describe its own products.

When custom can help.

An unusual wall width, a shallow room, or a sink that needs to sit off-center may call for a more specific brief. Custom work also lets you discuss the relationship between the integrated sink, countertop, and cabinet storage before the design is finalized.

Start by naming the problem. “We need more counter space to the right of the sink” is a useful design request. “We want something custom” is less specific.

Compare the complete scope.

Put both options on the same basis: cabinet, sink and countertop, necessary accessories, freight, installation, and any site work. For an international custom order, confirm delivery arrangements and responsibility for import charges in writing.

A low cabinet-only price and a complete delivered project quote are different offers. Ask what each figure includes before comparing them.

Allow for the decisions.

Made-to-order work needs a clear specification and an agreed drawing. Your contractor should review the finished dimensions, fitting allowance, plumbing, and mounting before production.

For Lave US projects, production and shipping estimates are confirmed with the quote. Share your target installation date early, rather than assuming a UK delivery estimate will apply.
