How to plan a custom bathroom vanity for a US home
Start with the room, the plumbing, and the way you use the sink. A custom vanity works best when those decisions are made together.
Measure the finished space. Mark your units. Plan the sink, faucet, and storage together. Have your contractor review the drawings before production.
1. Measure the finished space.
Record the available width, depth, and intended countertop height. Include baseboards, door swings, nearby fixtures, and the room needed to open drawers. For a wall-to-wall fit, measure at more than one point: an opening may vary from front to back.
Separate the size of the opening from the size you want the finished vanity to be. Your installer should agree the fitting allowance. A room measurement is not automatically a production dimension.
2. Keep inches and millimeters consistent.
Send measurements with units attached. NIST defines one inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters, so 48 inches is 1219.2 mm. A 1200 mm vanity is about 47.24 inches wide, not 48 inches.
| Width in inches | Exact metric equivalent |
|---|---|
| 30 inches | 762.0 mm |
| 36 inches | 914.4 mm |
| 48 inches | 1219.2 mm |
| 60 inches | 1524.0 mm |
| 72 inches | 1828.8 mm |
| 84 inches | 2133.6 mm |
These are conversions, not stock sizes, installation allowances, or a promise that every layout is suitable. Use the agreed final drawing for production.
3. Plan the sink and countertop as a design.
An integrated sink is designed into the vanity top for a coordinated look. For Lave’s custom vanities, discuss the countertop finish, bowl shape, and sink position together. “Integrated” describes the design relationship; ask about the construction and any joints for your selected specification.
For two sinks, work out where each person will stand and how much counter space you want between and beside them. A wider vanity may also work well with one sink and more usable counter space. Let your routine guide the layout.
4. Bring your contractor into the plan.
Share faucet specifications, drain and water-supply locations, and your preferred drawer arrangement. Plumbing can occupy space that looks available in a front-view photograph.
Room & Board’s measuring guide also emphasizes matching cabinet interiors to plumbing and allowing room for doors and drawers. Its product dimensions and delivery services apply to its own range.
For a floating vanity, have your contractor confirm the wall support and mounting approach for the actual cabinet and top. Your drawings and installation instructions should resolve the details before the wall is finished.
5. Confirm the US delivery details.
For an international order, confirm the quote currency, included components, shipping destination, delivery access, and who handles import charges. Ask for production and shipping estimates separately. A UK advertised price or delivery estimate should not be treated as a US delivered offer.
Lave is a UK company and quotes international delivery by project. Include your city, state, ZIP code, and any stairs, elevator restrictions, or difficult access in the initial request. Installation is not included as standard.
